The hiking trails of the Balaton Uplands are becoming more and more popular among excursionists year after year, and not without reason. The region’s unique geological features, the Permian red sandstone formations, the diverse flora, and the picturesque viewpoints represent natural treasures that are well worth discovering in person. The area around Balatonalmádi is particularly rich in such sights, and the Malom Valley–Ember Rock route is one of the best ways to get acquainted with this breathtaking landscape.
Malom Valley is an easily accessible natural excursion area stretching between Balatonalmádi and Szentkirályszabadja, and it forms part of the Balaton Uplands National Park. The valley takes its name from the mills that once operated in the area, using the water of the local streams. Although the mills have disappeared by now, the valley has preserved its original charm and close-to-nature atmosphere.
The Malom Valley Meadow is the ideal starting point and resting place for the excursion. Here, visitors are welcomed by a fire pit and comfortable benches, so it is possible not only to walk but also to rest for a longer time and enjoy a picnic. The meadow is especially magical in spring and summer, when wildflowers cover the area like a colorful carpet, but in autumn the vibrant foliage and in winter the snow-covered landscape also provide an unforgettable sight.
The mixed forest surrounding the valley – oaks, beeches, and hornbeams – provides pleasant shade in the summer heat while also serving as home to varied birdlife. With careful observation, woodpeckers, finches, and other forest birds can also be spotted.
Ember Rock can be reached from the Malom Valley Meadow by following the green-marked hiking trail, with a pleasant walk of approximately 20–30 minutes. This special natural rock formation dates back to the Permian period, around 250–300 million years ago, when the region had a dry, desert-like climate.
The rock got its name from the fact that, when viewed from a certain angle, it resembles a human figure – according to some, it forms the silhouette of a thinking person. This natural formation is one of the most photogenic points in the area, and many people make the pilgrimage here to capture the unique shape.
From the rock, there is a breathtaking view toward Szentkirályszabadja and the surrounding hills. In clear weather, the panorama reaches as far as the distant mountains, and sunsets create a particularly magical atmosphere at this point. For photographers and nature lovers, this is one of the best viewpoints in the area.
In early spring, from late March until mid-April, the pasque flower (Pulsatilla grandis) blooms near the rock. This protected plant species is a true rarity in the Balaton Uplands and can be found in fewer and fewer places in its natural habitat. The fluffy petals and golden stamens of the purple flowers provide an unforgettable sight and are among the most beautiful rewards of an early spring hike.
When observing the pasque flower, it is important to follow nature protection rules: it is forbidden to pick, dig up, or damage this protected plant in any way. Its beauty is best enjoyed through photography and quiet observation.
The Malom Valley and Ember Rock hike follows the green stripe hiking trail marking, which is well maintained and easy to follow. The route offers varied terrain: meadow sections, forest paths, and rocky stretches alternate, so the walk remains interesting throughout.
Suggested route:
The hike is easy to moderately difficult, making it ideal for beginner hikers and families as well. Everyone can adjust the pace to their own needs, and the meadow provides a perfect setting for longer rest stops.
